Can Coronavirus Spread in Pools?

By News May 12, 2020 | 3:46 PM

Memorial Day Weekend is right around the corner, that’s when most public pools are open in Lincoln. But what does the CDC say about the spread of Coronavirus in pools?

According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention there hasn’t been evidence that COVID-19 spreads through the water in pools, the reason is public pools are required to constantly disinfect water with chemicals in order to avoid the accumulation of harmful bacteria and protozoans.

The CDC says disinfecting the water in this way “should inactivate the virus in the water”

Dr. Michael Ison, an infectious disease physician at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, says people need to be careful when in locker rooms where individuals often touch their face, nose, and mouth. In that case, people need to remember to wash their hands before and after.
