An emotional scene at the Malone Community Center this afternoon as Lincoln Police Officers, Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies, Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister, and local community leaders gathered to pay tribute to the memory of George Floyd, a black man killed while in police custody in Minneapolis.

Bliemeister and the officers knelt in solidarity with leaders, placed flowers on the Groege Floyd memorial, and said that there are plans to create a joint community-police initiative with the aim of holding officers more accountable and preventing what happened in Minneapolis from happening

“We are not afraid of the accountability,” said Bliemeister. “We want the accountability.”

He continued.

“You’ve heard me say over and over again that we are (an) imperfect service. There’s nothing about this process that’s going to make us a perfect service, but it is going to make us better.”
