It had been more than a year since Husker fans attended a live sporting event for the school in Lincoln. That changed Friday.
The limited crowd of 1,647 fans at Hawks Field saw Nebraska (8-4) beat Minnesota (3-9) by a score of 6-1 in the 2021 home opener.
On the mound, Cade Povich pitched 7.0 shutout innings, racking up 10 strikeouts.
A Jaxon Hallmark home run in the first inning gave the Huskers a lead they would never relinquish. Nebraska notched 11 hits on the day, including multi-hit efforts by Hallmark, Mojo Haage, and Griffin Everitt.
The Huskers and Gophers are set for a double-header Saturday.
